ARTIST STATEMENT

Lola-Rose Pedersen (b. 1999, Montpellier) is an artist working from a foundation in craft: embroidery, collage and drawing. The work examines how places are shaped by systems of circulation: what is  discarded, emergent, repeating and in suspension between the values of usefulness and redundancy.

Through the activity akin to gleaning she gathers data; both as object and as digital asset. Hands, mouths and possessions of strangers appear as incomplete data: gathered, organised and archived in arrangements that fall short of the expectations of a traditional dataset.
Committed to holding the position that posits; to throw away, to put someone away, to look away is in practice a political fiction, “Away” is a logistical convenience and a misdirection of attention.

These hoards later appear in the work as rearrangements according to a specific sensibility, often informed by the movement of internet trends. Hyper aesthetic motifs sit alongside materials recognisable as trash. The formation of value arrives by dedicated occupational labour informed by historical liberatory practices and strategies learned through living provisionally.
Pedersen questions what agency we have within domestic and institutional spaces, how we meet them in a limited temporality, in tenuous belonging and contested property rights.

The work exists as a set of proposals and mechanisms for attending to what is made marginal, asking how things (objects, people, worldviews)  might hold entanglements beyond mapping.

The exhibition will be open from Wednesday 27th to Saturday 31st of October, 1-5pm daily.

Opening evening Wednesday 27th 6-9pm.

Throughout the week, additional events in the gallery will happen, including embroidery workshops.
Details to come soon

Lola-Rose Pedersen presents a series of embroidery works made in collaboration with Fine Cell Work, a charity that trains and employs people in prisons across England in fine needlework.

The works draw parallels between road markings and embroidery charts as code systems of instruction. Made without conventional charts, the embroideries bring these systems into dialogue, exploring the relationship between authority, trust and agency.

The works consider how the language of roads becomes a source of metaphors for life: paths, crossroads, lanes, wrong turns, destinations, junctions and dead ends are embedded within memoir, as though lives unfold across a landscape. The work asks how individuals’ journeys are entangled with wider social systems, and how movement, possibility and restriction are distributed.
